Around Petra Trek

The Petra Trek

Trekking in the region of Petra is a hike on foot while the luggage is carried by jeep or by camels from one night camp to the next. Short treks can last 2 to 4 days while more intensive treks can take 5 to 8 days.

The camel drivers, the cook and the mountain guide of your group will be Bedouin of the B’dul tribe, the tribe who until recently dwelled in the monuments of Petra. They are noted for their hospitality as well as for their services as guides and camel-drivers. We are often guests in their houses, monuments and tents.

We place special emphasis on group relations, and consider this a highly significant part of any desert experience. Our groups, led by professional guides and escorted by a Bedouin team enjoy an adventurous, yet safe tour with personal care given to the needs and interests of each member of the group.

The Petra Tour Concept

Petra, the ancient capital of the Nabateans, is a breath-taking site. Like at other world treasures, hundreds, sometimes thousands of people, stream through the narrow canyon leading to the main valley of Petra, every day, usually for a short day tour of the main site.

We offer you a different approach to this region. Only a few kilometers away from the crowd, in the center of the red sandstone mountains, you will find yourself alone with your group, hiking in one of the most beautiful sandstone views in the world, taking the time to experience the silence and the space of the Jordanian desert and the Nabatean heritage.

The Around Petra Trek will allow you to meet the land where the Nabateans traveled with their camel caravans. You will discover the less visited Nabatean sites scattered in the valleys and on the peaks of the mountains around Petra. For a few days you will experience the nomadic life style not very different from the life of the people of the Nabatean spice caravans of the third century.

Reaching the main site of Petra after a few days on the trek will give you and your group a deeper meaning and appreciation of the phenomenon of this hidden city. Your group will feel and understand how and why the last profitable stretch of the goods traffic in the Hellenistic world became a monopoly of the Nabateans. They will get a deeper insight of Petra, the religious, political and financial capital of the Nabateans and the pivot of all their trade. Crossing the desert camel passes they will come to realize why only the desert people could do this trade and become so rich and successful in such a short period of time.

It is the unique combination between the history of the region, the lavish architecture that the Nabateans left in and around Petra and the strongly intersected, intensely colorful landscapes, so rich in vegetation, that give the Around Petra Trek its striking beauty.

Suggested ways of touring the Petra Region

A short Petra tour, from a day tour to a three day trek, can be a part of a Jordan culture tour or an Israel-Jordan-Sinai Pilgrimage tour. An intensive 6 to 8 days Around Petra Trek will be the central part of your Jordan tour or Sinai – Jordan tour. We will help you design a program for the days before and after the trek according to the needs and interests of your group.
